Before you buy the drone

Short answer: in the United Kingdom the aircraft is usually the cheap part. Getting to the point where you can legally take money for a flight over anything interesting means a qualification, an operator registration, insurance and, for most paid work, an operational authorisation that costs more per year than many drones.

It is written for somebody deciding whether to start, so it is worth being blunt about the point of it: an honest version of this page has to be useful to a reader whose answer turns out to be no. Every figure below is either from the regulator or from companies publishing their own prices, and where nobody publishes a price, that is said rather than filled in.

It does not cover which industries use drone work. That is a separate question and a separate piece: where drone work is written into the rules.

Registration, which almost everybody needs

The Civil Aviation Authority runs two separate registrations and they are commonly confused.

An Operator ID identifies whoever is responsible for the aircraft. It costs £12.34 and is valid for one year, so it is a recurring charge rather than a one off, and you must be at least 18 to hold one.

A Flyer ID is the person's qualification, obtained by passing a theory test. The registration page sets out which aircraft need which.

The threshold changed at the start of this year. The CAA's notice on the new rules states that from 1 January 2026 a Flyer ID is needed for aircraft over 100g rather than over 250g, and that the test is free and taken online. The CAA estimates the change "could impact up to 500,000 drone flyers". If you are reading an older guide, this is the first thing in it that is out of date.

The qualification that commercial work usually turns on

A Flyer ID is the floor, not the destination. Two qualifications sit above it and the difference between them is worth understanding before paying for either.

The A2 Certificate of Competency covers flying closer to people in the Open category. The CAA's A2 CofC page states that it is awarded by approved providers called Recognised Assessment Entities, that the theory test is at least 30 multiple choice questions, that it is valid for five years, and that from 1 January 2026 the sub-category it covers is called Near People (A2). The CAA does not set its price.

The General VLOS Certificate is the one most commercial operating authorisations rest on. The CAA states that the GVC or a Level 1 Remote Pilot Certificate Part A is the minimum for visual line of sight work in the Specific category.

And the GVC is being retired, which matters if you are choosing a course now. The CAA's page on the certificates states that "The GVC will stop being issued on 31 December 2027", that it is replaced by Level 1, 2 and 3 Remote Pilot Certificates, and that "Existing GVCs will still be accepted until they expire, if the Operational Authorisation clearly states that a GVC is acceptable evidence of remote pilot competence." The GVC and RPC-L1 are valid five years; RPC-L2 and RPC-L3 are valid three. The CAA describes the GVC and RPC-L1 as "broadly similar in the level of competency needed to attain them", so this is a renaming with a deadline attached rather than a harder exam.

The annual bill most guides leave out

For most paid work beyond the Open category you need an operational authorisation, and this is a real annual bill rather than a formality.

The CAA's PDRA01 application page states the fee is £524, that "There's no VAT to pay", and that "Your authorisation will last for 12 months." It is issued quickly, the CAA aiming to do so within 24 hours, but it is not granted on the strength of a course certificate alone: the application requires an Operator ID, a valid operations manual and appropriate insurance already in place.

£524 every twelve months is the figure that changes the arithmetic of a small operation, and it is absent from most articles on this subject.

What the training costs, measured rather than estimated

The CAA approves the assessment entities and does not price their courses, so the prices come from the providers. Every figure below was read on 1 September 2026 from the provider's own page, and every one is linked, so each can be checked or found to have moved since.

One provider that publishes prices for both certificates is left out. Alongside its courses it runs a directory where customers search for drone operators and request quotes, so it is not a neutral source for a page like this one, and its prices are not counted below.

A2 Certificate of Competency, online. Three providers publish a price. Coptrz publishes £97 excluding VAT and states about ten hours of study. Commercial Drone Training publishes £99, states no VAT treatment either way, and says the course can be finished in less than a day. Heliguy publishes £149.50 with tax included, and states no overall duration, only a minimum of two hours of practical flight training and a theory exam of up to 75 minutes.

General VLOS Certificate. Five course options across three providers, and the spread is not noise. UAVHUB publishes £499 with tax included and sets no time limit on the theory, allowing twelve months to pass the practical assessment. Coptrz publishes £718.80 including VAT for an online course it estimates at forty hours. Flyby Technology publishes £999 plus VAT for ground school alone, and £1,450 plus VAT for a package covering the GVC and the A2 together. Coptrz publishes £1,196.40 including VAT for a three day course, two days in a classroom and one for the flight assessment.

What separates the ends of that range is format rather than the certificate. The cheaper end is self study with an assessment attached. The dearer end includes classroom time and a supervised flight test, and in one case the A2 as well.

A warning about comparing those numbers. VAT treatment differs between publishers and the difference is larger than the headline suggests. Of the figures above, one is printed excluding VAT, two say tax or VAT is included, one is quoted plus VAT, and one states nothing at all. The cheapest A2 headline of £97 becomes £116.40 once VAT is added, which is still the lowest of the three but by a much smaller margin than £97 against £149.50 implies. Read the VAT line before comparing two prices, because the cheapest headline is not reliably the cheapest course.

And at least one price on the open market is the same course sold twice. AlphaGeo publishes £749.50 with VAT included for a combined A2 and GVC package whose theory is delivered by Heliguy, named above. Counting every shop that sells a course would count some courses more than once, which is one reason the figures here are given per provider rather than as an average.

Insurance, and the number nobody publishes

Insurance is required rather than advisable. The CAA's page on flying for work states that "If you fly a drone or model aircraft for any other reason than recreation, sport, or as a hobby, you must have third party insurance as a minimum."

The level is set in retained European regulation. Article 7 of Regulation (EC) No 785/2004 sets a minimum third party cover of 0.75 million Special Drawing Rights for aircraft under 500kg. Article 2(2) excludes "model aircraft with an MTOM of less than 20 kg" from the regulation, which is the reason a hobby flight and a paid flight are not in the same position.

On price, the honest answer is that the market does not publish one. Two specialist commercial insurers were checked on 28 August 2026 and neither prints a premium: one states that drone insurance "doesn't come with a 'one size fits all' fixed price" and directs you to a quote, and the other lists cover levels and a phone number. That second insurer does give a useful anchor, stating its minimum starting level as £1,000,000 of cover and describing that as meeting the 750,000 SDR requirement.

Membership schemes are the exception and they publish, but read the scope before treating the figure as your answer. One publishes £24.99 a year, and its commercial tier carries £1m of public liability capped at £15,000 of commercial flying per year. That cap is the whole point: a low headline figure and a real operating business are not the same product.

So the sourced position is a requirement with a defined minimum, a published entry point for very small scale work, and no publishable figure for commercial cover. Anyone quoting you a confident annual premium for drone insurance without asking what you fly and where is guessing.

How long it takes

Adding up only the parts that state a duration: the Flyer ID test is free and online, the A2 CofC courses that give one say about ten hours or less than a day, the online GVC course that gives one estimates forty hours, the in person GVC route is three days, and the CAA aims to issue a PDRA01 within 24 hours of application. Several providers state no duration at all, which is itself worth noticing before planning around one.

What that does not include is the operations manual the authorisation requires, and no source found here states how long writing one takes. It is the step most likely to sit between a finished course and a first legal paid flight, and it is the one nobody puts a number on. Treat any timeline that omits it with suspicion, including this one.

What this page will not tell you

It will not tell you whether the work is there for you, and no honest page can. Market size projections are easy to find and impossible to check, so none appears here. What can be checked is that the obligations are real, the annual costs recur whether or not you fly, and the paperwork is the part that takes the time.

If those numbers look survivable against what you expect to earn, the next question is where the work is specified and what a job specification will ask for, which is the other article. If they do not, that is a useful answer too, and it costs nothing to reach it before buying an aircraft.
