Flying a drone in Indonesia
Harder than it looks. A drone over 250 g must be registered before it is flown, and the registration application has to be made by an Indonesian citizen or legal entity, so a visitor cannot register one in their own name. Location permits are common, and Komodo National Park carries a daily drone tariff.
- Regulator
- Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Ministry of Transportation (DGCA)
- Registration
- Required. Part 107 article 107.13 permits nobody to operate a small unmanned aircraft unless it is registered with the Directorate General and can display its registration mark. Article 107.89 covers aircraft over 250 g and up to 25 kg, and requires the application to come from an Indonesian citizen or legal entity. Commercial operators need authorisation plus insurance.
- Maximum altitude
- 120 m (400 ft) above ground level. Within 120 m of a structure, up to 120 m above the top of it. Exceeding the limit needs an exemption letter from the Director General. The 150 m often quoted for Indonesia is the required clearance below cloud, not a ceiling.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. Drone rules change frequently and vary by location. Always confirm the current rules with the national aviation authority (linked below) before you fly. Last reviewed: July 2026.
