What this service involves

Aerial photography is the production of still images from above, flown to a brief rather than gathered opportunistically. The subject, the light and the airspace decide the flight plan between them, and the frames the brief calls for are captured at the height and angle that suit them.

The height a small drone flies at is the point of it. Fifty metres above a site gives a perspective a mast cannot reach and a crewed aircraft is rarely permitted to hold, and it does so close enough to keep detail that a satellite image loses entirely.

  • Marketing and communications teams, who need a photograph of a building, a site or an event that establishes where it is and how it sits in its surroundings.
  • Architects and developers, documenting a completed building in its context, which is the shot a ground level camera cannot take.
  • Landowners and estate managers, recording boundaries, access and the condition of land that is tedious to walk and hard to photograph usefully from the ground.

What to expect on the day

Light governs the schedule more than anything else. The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give the modelling that makes an aerial photograph readable, and a shoot booked for the middle of a bright day will produce flatter images however well it is flown.

Airspace and any clearance the location needs are settled ahead of travelling. On site, the flying itself is usually a small part of the visit: most of the time goes on positioning, waiting for light and cloud, and reviewing frames before packing up.

Delivery is normally a set of edited high resolution stills. Raw files, extra crops and specific aspect ratios are worth naming in the brief, because they change what the pilot captures rather than what they hand over.

How high can the drone fly?

Lower than most people expect. Small drones are flown within defined height limits that vary by country, and the useful range for photography sits well below the ceiling anyway, because detail falls away quickly with altitude.

What is the difference between aerial photography and aerial videography?

Stills and motion are flown differently. Photography holds position for a frame and prioritises resolution and light; videography flies a move and prioritises smoothness and continuity. A visit can produce both, but the flight plan is not the same and it is worth saying which matters more.

Can it be flown over a city centre?

It depends on the specific location. Built up areas, crowds and controlled airspace each impose their own requirements, and some combinations need permissions arranged well in advance. The address is the thing that determines this, so it is worth naming early.

Who owns the images?

Copyright in a photograph starts with the person who took it. Unless there is a written agreement saying otherwise, that is the pilot, even where a client commissioned and paid for the shoot. What a client usually wants is either a licence covering the uses they have in mind or a full transfer of rights, and both of those have to be written down. Licensing, transfer and delivery of the raw files are three different things, and each is worth settling before the flight.

What weather stops a shoot?

Rain, strong or gusting wind, and low cloud that sits below the height the shot needs. Overcast conditions do not stop a flight but they flatten the light, which matters for photography more than for inspection work.
