What to expect on the day

A site flight is usually planned around the working day rather than the light, because the point is to record the site as it is being worked. Access is arranged with the site team, launch and landing points are agreed away from lifting operations and traffic routes, and the pattern flown is the one the next visit will repeat.

Deliverables typically include high resolution stills from fixed positions and a short overview video. Where measurement is needed rather than illustration, the same flight can be flown with the overlap and ground control that photogrammetry requires, which is a different specification and worth stating up front.

Recurring work is normally arranged as a schedule rather than as separate visits, because consistency of position and interval is what makes the series comparable.

The unit changes with the border. French and Italian operators price the flight and the data processing as two separate line items, American firms sell monthly programmes with a minimum visit count, and one Canadian operator prices maps per square metre by resolution. A single figure flattens all of that.

The better the operator, the less likely they publish. Every dedicated LiDAR and legal survey firm found in Canada, and every certificated survey operator found in New Zealand, publishes no price at all.

Where these figures come from. They are measured from prices that drone companies publish on their own websites, read in August 2026. They are not quotes and they are not averages. Each range covers the middle of what publishers in that region charge for that job, the number of companies behind it is shown beside it, and nothing is converted between currencies.

What moves the price. Post production is the largest single factor, and most operators charge for the edit separately from the flying. What you are handed at the end matters next: imagery on its own, an edited film, and a written report are three different products. After that come time on site, travel, and any permission the location needs. Only about one company in five states whether its published price includes tax, so published figures are not always comparable with each other.

One thing worth knowing. The better the operator, the less likely they publish a price at all. The heavy lift and cinema companies, the dedicated survey and LiDAR firms, and the most heavily certificated operators in every region we measured publish nothing. These figures describe the part of each market that does publish.

How often should a site be flown?

It depends on how fast the site changes and what the record is for. Monthly is a common interval for programme reporting; a fast moving groundworks phase may justify more, and a long fit out phase where nothing changes externally may justify less.

Can the same flight produce measurements?

Only if it is flown for that. Measurable output needs planned image overlap and usually ground control, which is a different flight plan from one flown for illustration. It is worth deciding which you need before the first visit, because the two are hard to reconcile afterwards.

Does work have to stop while the drone flies?

Not usually, but lifting operations and the areas beneath them are coordinated with the site team, and the flight is planned around them rather than through them.

What about people on site and in neighbouring properties?

Separation from people who are not part of the operation is set by the rules that apply where the site is, and it is one of the main constraints on where the aircraft can go. Dense urban sites with occupied neighbours are the most constrained.

Is the imagery usable as evidence of when something was built?

Dated imagery of a site is a record of what was visible on that date. How much weight it carries in a dispute is a question for the people running the dispute, but a consistent series is more useful than isolated photographs.
